OBJECTIVE: TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO KNOW THEIR SICKLE CELL GENOTYPES/STATUS.
The biggest population in the country doesn’t know its genotype. This is manifested during the outreaches and research that we make. Most people who are asked whether they know their genotype give a negative response.
We offer free sickle cell screening during our community activities and on every Wednesday at our office. This aimed at promoting exclusive awareness of Sickle Cell. When people test they are ultimately informed about their sickle cell genotype which helps them make informed decisions. Currently 1% of our population is aware of their sickle cell status; this means that people who are sickle cell carriers are ignorantly marrying resulting into a multiplication in sicklers.
People come to our office for screening and others call us to their communities for the similar service. In addition people have requested for sickle cell testing to be made mandatory for whoever visits a health facility especially couples. More sickle cell clinics have been set up in various health facilities by government and free sickle cell screening is offered which includes newborn screening.
